Best Sandustry Layouts: Design for Growth, Not for Today
Sandustry punishes cramped factories: every machine you later dig around, every belt you rip out, every water pocket you dodge is time the factory isn't producing. A layout that plans for the next machine — not just the current one — is the difference between a 10-hour save and a 40-hour save.
Think in Zones, Not in Rooms
The community-tested pattern is modular zones COMMUNITY: one zone per production stage — digging, wet-sand mixing, sifting, gold storage — each with its own dedicated belt lane. Long-time players replaying the Demo with a fresh start use exactly this: efficient layout and resource management over raw machine count single-source (video evidence).
Diagonal Shakers: The First Big Win
Placing shakers on the diagonal leaves a gap between machine bodies that belts can pass through COMMUNITY. It sounds minor; in practice it halves the belt spaghetti around your first gold line. See Shaker Setup for the machine itself.
The 25-Block Press Shaft
The Slag Press requires 1 Burnt Slag dropped from at least 25 blocks to convert into 1 Gold + 1 Spore VERIFIED. Plan the shaft before you plan the burn zone: dig a vertical column at the edge of your factory, put the press at the bottom, and let the burn stage feed the top. Details in Lava & the Slag Press.
One-Way Logistics
Keep every lane one-directional COMMUNITY. A loop that doubles back on itself is where items start recirculating and clogging filters. Rule: if a belt ever passes under its own start, delete and rebuild the lane.
Leave Room to Expand
- Two-wide corridors minimum — one belt lane + one walking lane, everywhere.
- Water is a hazard, not a decoration — wall off catch-basins before they leak into production.
- Depth is free real estate — dig down for parallel lines instead of widening a cluttered floor.
If it's cramped, it's temporary. Every top-tier layout in the community starts as a rough zone plan and only survives because expansion was planned for.
