Sandustry Demo Guide: What the Free Trial Offers, and How It Differs from EA

Don't want to pay yet? Sandustry has a free Demo on Steam (app 3490390, store page) ✅ VERIFIED. Officially, the Demo has the same core loop as EA — mine & refine, build & expand, research, dynamic weather, all four present ✅ VERIFIED. But "same core loop" isn't "same details" — there's one key difference turning a wave of old video tutorials into traps.

What's in the Demo

If you only want to answer one question — "do I like the feel of this pixel physics?" — the Demo is enough. If the feel lands, consider PC Game Pass or a Steam buy-out; for the verdict first, read our Review.

⚠️ Key Difference: The Lava Self-Ignite Trick Is Dead

To everyone watching old tutorials: the Demo-era trick of "filter-pour-lava self-ignition" (routing lava through a filter to spark a fire source) is dead in EAVERIFIED (officially confirmed heat-system rework). EA switched to a Burner Belt + Thermal Buffer architecture to manage heat. If you copy a Demo lava design into EA, all you'll get is an unlit production line and a head full of question marks.

Why the change? When the simulation engine was rewritten in 2026, the heat system was reworked wholesale: heat is no longer a simple "touch = burn," it now has buffering and conduction layers. The Burner Belt supplies steady heat; the Thermal Buffer smooths peaks and troughs. The cost is a dead old trick; the gain is a heat system that went from "voodoo" to "engineerable" — one of the few systematic EA-vs-Demo improvements.

Practical advice: when watching YouTube tutorials, check the publish date and version first. Demo-based heat tutorials published before August 2026 are untrustworthy by default. The full difference list (not just heat) is in EA vs Demo Mechanics.

Demo & Mods: Check the Physics Version

The Demo can run mods, but there's an iron rule 🔶 COMMUNITY: always check the mod's target physics version. The engine rewrite means Demo and EA physics don't fully match — a mod built for EA may fail or error in the Demo, and vice versa. Before installing, read the mod page's target version; if unlabeled, treat it as "only for the version the author tested."
