Shaker Setup: Sandustry's First Machine, Done Right
The Shaker is where every Sandustry playthrough actually begins: it is the first research node in the official tech tree (20 gold) VERIFIED and the machine that turns wet sand into gold. Get its placement right and the whole early game flows; get it wrong and you'll be re-digging corridors for hours.
Unlock & Research Position
The official wiki snapshot lists the research tree from Shaker (20 gold) up to the Synthesizer (7,500 gold) VERIFIED — the Shaker is the cheapest, most important node in the game. It belongs to the official 34-building roster (Shaker through Flux Emanator) VERIFIED. Save your first 20 gold specifically for it; there is no meaningful alternative spend that early.
What It Eats: The Wet-Sand Recipe
The core formula VERIFIED: 1 sand + 1 water = 2 wet sand → Shaker → gold + residue, at roughly 4 wet sand per 1 gold. So a Shaker starves if its wet-sand line is weak — match the supply before you add a second machine.
Ratio rule of thumb: produce wet sand at 4× your target gold rate. One Shaker fed a steady wet-sand stream out-produces two Shakers fighting over an empty belt.
Placement: Flat First, Diagonal Later
A flat, single-file layout works for the first hour, but the community-tested throughput trick is diagonal shakers — placing machines on the diagonal so their outputs don't collide and belts can pass through the gaps COMMUNITY. This is the single highest-value early-game layout change you can make (more in Best Layouts).
Routing Gold Into a Collector
Gold produced by a Shaker needs to end up in a Collector VERIFIED — a container that stacks and stores it safely. Chain: Shaker → belt → Collector. Do not let gold pile on the floor near the machine; loose gold can fall into water or block your own walking lanes.
