How to Get Gold in Sandustry: Wet Sand, Shakers, and Ratios

Gold is the currency of the entire early game, and every gold bar starts as ordinary sand. This guide covers the core recipe, the throughput tricks the community uses, and a troubleshooting method that stops you from throwing more machines at a problem that isn't a machine problem.

The Core Recipe

The loop is simple: 1 sand + 1 water = 2 wet sand COMMUNITY, and feeding wet sand into a Shaker yields Gold + residue — roughly 4 wet sand per 1 gold COMMUNITY. The gold then has to reach a Collector to count toward your research total.

Mind the ratio, not the vibe. Before you scale up, a production-ratio helper (sand / water / shaker / slag-burner throughput) lets you plan capacity. Just remember custom maps and mods can desync ratios from vanilla numbers single-source.

Banking Gold in the Collector

Gold sitting on the floor does nothing. Route it into a Collector — only gold held there is spendable at the research panel COMMUNITY. Early on, one Collector fed by one Shaker is enough; the bottleneck is almost always upstream (sand + water), not the Collector itself.

Throughput Tricks

Once the basics run, two community techniques raise output without more Shakers:

Troubleshooting: Chase the Chain, Not the Machines

The single most useful method from the community wikis COMMUNITY: don't add a machine first — trace the chain first. For any stalled step, ask in order:

  1. Does the first machine have input?
  2. Is that input in the correct state?
  3. Are the conditions for the next conversion met?
  4. Can the output leave?

And the rule that saves hours: three starving machines aren't faster than one. Use pile position to diagnose:

If material piles…The cause is…
Before a machinethat step is too slow
After a machinetransport / downstream is too slow
Nowhereinsufficient raw material (sand or water)

What to Unlock First

Spend gold in this community-consensus order COMMUNITY: Refinement 1 → Logistics 1 → Filter → Pipes → Tools → Refinement 2 (Slag Press) → Drones. Buy production and logistics before toys. Node costs live on the Tech Tree page.

When and How to Scale Up

When your diagonal-shaker chain runs steady and the Collector ticks up reliably, that's your expansion window. Principle: duplicate the whole chain before optimizing a single step — a proven shaker line is a "money-printing unit" you can copy-paste, far safer than squeezing one more machine into a cramped cell.
