Sandustry Lag & Performance Guide (FPS Boost)
Baseline First: Does This Game Even Need a Beefy PC?
Sandustry's hardware floor is very low: minimum 4GB RAM, DirectX 11-class GPU (GTX 550 Ti / HD 7750 tier) VERIFIED, and an SSD is officially recommended VERIFIED. Platforms: Windows / Mac / Linux / Steam Deck VERIFIED.
But "runs" and "stays smooth" are different things. This is a per-pixel physics simulation: every grain of sand, every drop of water, every wisp of steam is computed live. So the deciding variable isn't your GPU — it's how many physics pixels are alive in your save at once.
- ✅ Steam Deck community-tested 30–60fps (ProtonDB data, varies with factory size and weather intensity) COMMUNITY.
- ✅ v0.5.3 fixed the steam/rain simulation memory leak (community-sourced patch notes) COMMUNITY — players still on v0.5.2 or earlier should update first; this one may solve your problem outright. See v0.5.3 Notes.
Why It Lags: Three Typical Bottlenecks
1. Large-scale weather simulation
Rain and steam are the highest pixel-density sims. After v0.5.3 fixed the leak it no longer "explodes the longer you play," but multiple big regions running intense water cycles at once is still a frame-killer COMMUNITY. Symptom: fps drops when it rains, recovers when it stops.
2. Save-size bloat
In a save of dozens of hours, dug-out tunnels, piled loose sand, and stray water everywhere all stay in sim. The old factory-game rule holds here too: late-game lag mostly comes from total world state, not a single machine.
3. Overlay & background conflicts
Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner and similar overlays can conflict with rendering. From v0.5.3 the dev added a GPU-overlay launch option COMMUNITY to bypass exactly this; if it's paired with a launch crash (0xc0000142), see the 0xc0000142 guide.
Optimization Checklist (by payoff)
- Update to the latest build first. v0.5.3's steam/rain memory fix COMMUNITY is the most important perf patch of launch week; every EA hotfix is worth taking (history in v0.5.3 Notes).
- Install on an SSD. Official spec recommends SSD VERIFIED; a mechanical drive amplifies load-time stutter and autosave hitches.
- Shrink regions running large-scale weather sim. Concentrate water/steam systems in a few planned zones, not across the whole map; wall off unused catch-basins.
- Cap save size. Periodically clear meaningless loose-sand piles and abandoned-tunnel water; before starting a new map, ask whether the old save really needs loading every day.
- Pause distant lines by tier. Deep production you no longer maintain — cut the input to stop it; fewer active machines in sim, easier on the physics engine.
- Disable extra overlays. Keep only one overlay (Steam or GPU vendor), exit the rest; use v0.5.3's GPU-overlay launch option if needed COMMUNITY.
Steam Deck Specifics
Sandustry is officially Deck-supported VERIFIED, community-tested 30–60fps COMMUNITY. Practical Deck advice:
- Lock the frame cap at the 40fps tier — physics games care more about frame stability than absolute fps.
- Late-game save decay on Deck is sharper than on desktop PC; "cap save size" matters most for Deck players.
- Deck-specific launch issues? Same 0xc0000142 flow (mod compat is more sensitive under Proton).
FAQ
Memory keeps climbing the longer I play — leak?
Before v0.5.3, steam/rain sim had a real memory leak (community-sourced notes) COMMUNITY — updating to the latest should clearly ease it. If the latest build still shows steady memory growth, bring the crash log (more detailed since v0.5.3) to the official Discord.
Is 4GB RAM really enough?
Enough to launch VERIFIED, but late-game big saves want 8GB+ headroom. Physics-pixel total sets memory need, not graphics settings.
Does lowering graphics quality help?
Limited. The bottleneck is CPU-side physics sim and memory, not GPU rendering. That's why the checklist has no graphics options — cut the pixels in sim first.
